Care at Home (Wearside) Limited was established in 1989 by former RGN and Ward Sister Margaret Mandal. Having grown up on a small farm in Ireland, Margaret travelled to England to pursue her dream of nursing.

It was during her time as a Ward Sister that Margaret began to consider the needs of patients who were due to be discharged from hospital, knowing they would be unsupported at home and recognising the need of a reliable after hospital support service.

Margaret founded Care at Home with only one objective, and that was to provide a quality care service to the people of Sunderland, supporting those who require extra care in their own home to retain their independence.

Care at Home was only the second company of its kind to open in England and has maintained its original focus, ensuring the wellbeing of its service users, for over 30 years.

Care at Home remains a family run business and In January 2019, Margaret retired to spend some time with her family and withdraw from the day-to-day operations of Care at Home appointing Amanda Purvis to manage all aspects of the service.

Amanda’s' initial interest within homecare stemmed from providing informal support to her mother who suffered motor neurone disease and required palliative care at home.

She then moved on to join a local homecare agency as a support worker. Amanda quickly realised that there were several changes that could be made to provide people at home with a more inclusive and person-centred care package and went on to further her career within social care.

Amanda has worked alongside small independent and large corporate care organisations and has a vast amount of experience of managing care provision across several settings, her ultimate aim is to ensure that the Care at Home team are supported to deliver a high-quality service across the North East for years to come.
